Accident and illness plans reimburse eligible vet bills after you pay a deductible, at a reimbursement level you choose, up to an annual limit. Pets Best and Embrace both let you set the deductible and reimbursement options34, and Embrace advertises reimbursement of up to 90% of vet bills2.
Cost. Embrace cites the American Animal Hospital Association's figures of $62.44 a month for dogs and $32.21 for cats on average in 2025, and says its own 2026 averages ran $20 to $70 for dogs and $10 to $30 for cats. A higher annual limit or lower deductible raises the premium1.
Pre-existing conditions. Anything noted before the waiting period ends counts as pre-existing, even without a vet visit, in Embrace's definition; Embrace says some curable conditions can become eligible after a period free of symptoms and treatment2. Pets Best likewise excludes conditions that existed before the policy started or developed during a waiting period4. Enrolling a young, healthy pet keeps the list short.
Routine care is separate. Wellness or routine care cover pays for expected visits; Pets Best sells it as an add-on for an extra premium at enrollment, within 30 days of enrolling or at renewal5.
